Well, the fears that I had with the Wh1000xm5s have come to pass. My first unit was taken back because it randomly shut down completely while listening to music. I had hoped that this was not the common case for this unit and may have gotten a lemon or my first purchase or something. But no such luck. After I got my 2nd pair and about 2 hours straight of listening and a couple of listening sessions throughout the day looked successful…when I went to bed last night with 90 % of battery still left and I played my normal ASMR playlist and bam…sound went out in the middle of listening…and disconnected from my phone. I pulled them off to see the zero blue light or indicator for power…unit was completely shut off.

I get that the first users are the ones that get the bad headphones and issues first. We are the ones that report the bugs and Sony can get out an update to fix them. But it’s sad to see issues with Sony products at launch. It has become the norm it seems with their headphones and earphones. Does this mean that the product is doomed? No, of course not. Sony seems to have a good track record of handling the issues in their product pretty fast and hopefully this will be one of them. It’s just funny that I haven’t heard not even one person talk about this. But twice in a row confirms an issue for me that others will see. Now I just need to decide if I will return them or wait on an update that may or may not fix them. You can still turn them back on and wait for them to randomly shut off again while you are in the middle of a phone call, listening to music, or watching a movie if you want. But I’m not sure I want to sit around waiting on random failures for a $400.

Update… According to a user on Reddit…this is an issue that is corrected by turning off the auto power-off feature. For some reason even if in use this function is causing the unit to power off regardless of use or not. I will be testing this out and hopefully, this will work.
