Well, it has been a long time since we have even concerned ourselves with speakers. I got my Audioengine speakers years ago and haven’t really thought about doing anything more to my desk since its integration into my desk setup. But recently I decided after getting back out my DJ Pioneer Mix Deck that I was going to look into speaker upgrades. I really didn’t have the bass I wanted with the Audioengine 2’s and it really stood out more when I mixed. The sound was just lacking impactful meaning during my sessions and all I wanted to do was stop. I thought for a second about getting a sub-woofer for the Audioengine A’s but they wanted $300+ for it. So looked into other options and ran into these, the Pioneer Dm50’s.

I went with them because all the reviews said they have very nice high-end detail as well as very nice bass and mids. And that was very important to me. I just didn’t want to go with something that just had bass without clarity. I really needed the detail to shine through on my mixes along with the mids and bass. And not only did these do this they had some very powerful sound volumes at 50w. I barely turn the dial past 10 o’clock before I start to be concerned about how loud it is. Now granted I have this hooked up to my E50 topping DAC along with my Peace EQ software but even if you don’t have this you still can get very nice volume from them. But if you get them without using a DAC and EQ and aren’t happy with them …then just know that these used with a DAC and EQ can be pushed to newer levels, especially with the bass side of things.

The bass went from decent and better than the Audioengine to “very impactful” and “thumping” regardless of what you are comparing them to. And at price of $169 for both speakers …I just didn’t see many others that were spoken about that included more key areas of need for me than these. Yes, some had high treble or mids but little in bass. Or others just were bookshelf speakers without RCA, TRS, or USB connections and only had speaker port connections. I needed speakers I could hook my Dj Deck and computer to at the same time and this made choices smaller but the Pioneer had it all. I’m just glad I found these and they worked out. They also are built very solid and have a very high quality and long-lasting build look and feel so I don’t think I will be looking to replace them because they stop working or anything. I was though, concerned about some of the hate I found online about these. It was almost like these people didn’t even really test these things. 80% or more reviews were positive but the 20% or less that weren’t were complaining about things that just didn’t exist about these things. Lack of bass and build quality are the last things in the world you can have complaints about with these speakers. I really feel this was motivated by brand more than the product, so be careful who you listen to about these. For me though, I give them an 8.5 out 10 Stars for my score.
