This was one of the strangest contest I’ve ever had in my tech life:). Mainly this was due to the fact that both choices really had no wrong direction attached to them. In fact the clear winning choice still left me feeling weird about my choice because I still felt a attachment to the other one still. Here I was with possibly the most bought speaker/monitor on the market today, the Presonus and yet standing in its way was one of the most well known names in the business, Pioneer, with it’s dm-50’s. I guess most people could come up with reasons one way or another based on what they needed them for. But for me…it was simply a matter of sound and looks, for some reason.

At $170, the Pioneer DJ Dm-50 were the dominant force. They had the size and beefy looks to them that screamed superior sound. And yes, they had this. Their bass was just fuller and richer at 54hz-30khz compared to the Presonus Eris 4.5 70hz-20hz. This made their bass, compared to the Pioneer’s, a little less filling and a little more hallowed. Yes, the Presonus had good soundstage, treble, and features like added bass and treble knobs on the back compared to the single Studio/Dj’s switch-over on the back of the Pioneers. But the problem was with the fact that the Pioneer also had a good soundstage, treble details, and a little extra power that the Presonus Eris didn’t. So when things like Asmr, Edm, Rap, and or Classical played over them both the Pioneer’s sound and power just stood out and made itself known to be the best. Even upon blind listening with two other people, it was very clear to them that the Pioneer had the best sound of the two. But when I looked over at the two( even though I knew who the best was)…I was still stuck staring at the Presonus’s looks, size, and even the matt finish material it had. I really wanted the Presonus to be better than the Pioneer even though I knew for sure that it wasn’t. The Presonus at $120 just stuck out to me and I couldn’t figure out why at first. And after time of consideration the only thing I could come up with is a pathetic biasedness toward the color black as my only reason. And that’s not enough to make the choice for the Presonus monitors over the Pioneers. And so I prepared to box them up and return them back to Amazon. Maybe I should have gotten the Pioneers in black or maybe even the Dm 40’s in black …which would have been a closer match to the size and thumbprint of the Presonus Eris.
