Sony’s xm5’s, possibly the biggest and most popular launched earphone next to the AirPods. I’ve had them since launch and decided that I wasn’t going to keep them over my Sennheiser’s. And my biggest issues with them seems to be developing into a very big hot topic over the past weeks of its availability, the tips and fit. When I mentioned these things I was met with a lot of hate for coming up with such bad comments about the perfect Sony’s. But the struggle is real I see. These same reports link back to Reddit forms full of users who discovered things with the fit and tips just like I did and it’s not a small amount of people either. In fact, as the days and weeks go by more and more people are putting their results in the same form. So much so that I believe Sony might have a class suit or possible recall on these. Some users are even reporting wounds inside their ear thanks to the stupid pebble like dot apart of the surface of the buds that sits directly on some ears( see below). This was something I truly didn’t understand the need for. Beyond that, the tips are just not designed well enough for a good amount of people. These people who experience this fail to hear the sound quality promised by Sony because they don’t seal. This results in them not getting the proper bass or ANC as well.
I wrestled very heavily with these myself and brought up my concern with sound and ANC and offered my suggestion to switch the tips out to another style. This works for some and not others though. Overall, I think the Xm5’s could have been really earth shaking if they delivered for more people. I was able to get it to work for me over time but I just had the belief that this would be seen by more and more people as the weeks and months go by and I was right. So before you run out and buy the Sonys, just be aware of the possibility that you might fall inside or outside this range of issues with your ears and the tips as well. If they work for you, I’m sure you’ll find enjoyment in them. But if not , then you might have to decide to exchange the tips for different kinds( making sure they still have a protective mesh for the hole) or something exchange the earphones period.
