Meet my Monarch MK2! And just like all of my most important tech items, a nickname is given. I had to come up with one the described not only what it looked like but something worthy enough to fit it’s dominance in the Audiophile world as the only $1000 S tier ranked IEM. So the name has been given of “Kilgharrah”. Kilgharrah is the mythical Dragon of Merlin. It both links the Kingship of King Author and the role the Dragon played in it with the term Monarch. It also connects the dragon like scales on the surface of the plates for the IEM back to Kilgharrah. Amongst all that, of course, it represents the sure dominance, power, and size.
Now about that size, this is where things gather in concern for a lot of audiophiles. The picture and rumors point to a concern that this IEM might be too large for a lot of people’s ears. Truth be told, it was my greatest concern and is the only reason I didn’t end up with the Monarch MK2 earlier. I was just too afraid to loose the comfort I had with my Oracle MK2 and others. I just don’t believe in paying for anything they will hurt me or put me in discomfort.

Well, once I got them, what I found, for my ears is that the shell and width actually fit my ears perfectly, almost like a custom fit. I literally have no room left before my ear begins to stretch and because of that it’s one of the best fitted IEM I’ve ever had. A lot of that is because the shell is actually shallow despite the width of the plate and I think this is what saves it for me. It was also the reason I went with the MK2 over the Mk3. I can’t stand for things to stick out of head like corks looking like Frankenstein.

The MK3 unfortunately does do this along with some unnatural sound pushes in treble that I’m not interested in, but that’s a different conversation. The bottom line is that the Monarch MK2 might not be a size issue like some fear. Could it be? Sure! I just don’t think it’s as bad universally as some fear and I believe there are more people out there that will find them fitting them perfectly than those that don’t. It’s just that most people don’t want to take the chance without first testing them for themselves because of how expensive they are and you can’t really blame them. All I can say is that I have normal shaped ears, not big and not small. So if you have normal shape ears with normal depth, the Monarch MK2 will fit you just fine.
