I’ve wrote this article 5x now in different ways and still can’t express what I want to express about product and lessons learned fully. What I know for sure that I want to express is my journey I took has resulted in a lot of returns through these trails and test to find “MY DAP”. I’m grateful for places like Amazon, Headamp, and Bloom Audio for all their understanding on my returns. I did though try and start off with lower cost DAPs first before I wanted to ever consider buying $1000+ units. I just didn’t want to be that guy that spent $1000+ because of placebo differences. In fact, I went into this believing that no such advantage was found in sound in more expensive DAPs. So I sat out on a mission…

On the way things like the Hiby m300, Hiby R4 were the first to be returned. While they provided good sound (the R4, that is), the sounds wasn’t a game changer over my dongle and smartphone. It wasn’t until the Ibasso dx180 that I found the advantage, beauty, and love of using a DAP. The sound was engaging, dynamic, lush, smooth, emotional. But the build quality wasn’t done well. Buttons issues marred the experience for me. Then came the Dx260mk2 Reference DAP. Quality was there, resolution as sharp glass and ice, soundstage was large, and imaging was great but the sound was dry, lacking smoothness, emotions, and engagment. The build quality finally was more impressive but still had a small misalignment of ports flaws in build(not a big deal but a deal that shouldn’t be at this price). It also had random failures to the touch surface.

Then finally the Cayin N6III was purchased. It was the absolute beauty, work of art, master quality in audio and craftsmanship..pictues don’t do justice to its actual beauty. The unit came with an amazing case with a heat sync plate, actual real gold pvd coated buttons, volume wheel, and ports. More memory than any other DAP tried before, allowing faster and smoother performance than any other DAP. Even the battery life was longer than any tried prior. The sound was musical, smooth, gripping, connecting, weighted, engaging, and rich. The soundstaging was the best I’ve heard, even over the Dx260mk2.

The details were outstanding yet giving a softer landing than the cold sterile results of the Dx260mk2. Asmr, movies, podcast, audiobooks, rock, rap, tech house, classical, you name it…all faithful represented with accuracy with a touch of smoothness and beauty needed to make it stand out more realistic.

I can confidently say it’s an unique player in the world of digital audio players. Even the screen was amazing looking with Gorilla Glass screen as a standout feature—it’s not just durable but also comes with a genuine glass screen protector, a significant upgrade from the plastic ones you’d find on a standard screen like the DX260mk2. It’s this kind of attention to detail that really sets the N6III apart. Best of all zero failures to software, touch screen, or operating systems.
Cayin’s meticulous design extends beyond the screen. The physical buttons, from their shape to their placement, are expertly engineered to prevent accidental presses, a common frustration with many DAPs. This thoughtful design shows that every aspect of the user experience was carefully considered.
But what truly makes the Cayin N6III a remarkable device is its upgradeability. For the first time, you have a DAP that’s not a dead-end. You can easily upgrade the internal DAC to an R2R DAC board with the simple press of two buttons. This means if you ever want to change your sound signature, you don’t have to buy an entirely new unit. This isn’t just a convenience; it’s a leap forward in audio technology, giving you a future with your device instead of a dead-end.
The N6III offers a unique combination of premium build quality, smart design, and unparalleled upgradeability. For me, it has truly been the best DAP experience to date.
Conclusion:

I’ve always been on the hunt for the perfect audio experience, and my journey with the DX260mk2 was a classic example of a product falling short despite its technical strengths. While I was impressed with its resolution, soundstage, and imaging, I just couldn’t get past the direction to more reference results vs musical ones.
In my previous reviews, I’ve made it clear how much I missed the tonality weight and engaging sound profile of the DX180. The DX260mk2, in contrast, felt less engaging, with lower volume and reduced dynamics. It simply wasn’t as musical. I couldn’t understand why a newer model would feel like a step backward in these key areas.
Ultimately, the DX260mk2 just didn’t connect with me on a personal level, so it went back for a refund. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the specs on paper don’t tell the whole story. The best gear is the kind that truly moves you. And with the Cayin N6III, this is exactly what happened to me, and I was “never the same again”…as Cayin likes to say.
