Lets face it folks .. there are a ton of knives in the world. There are a ton of brand names for knife making as well. And don’t get me started on the many different metal types for the bands. Spyderco , Benchmade, Chris Reeve, Cold Steel, and more are just a small amount of names. Everything from s30, s35, s90v, M4, and many many more steel types are all a part of this universe. So I get it, I truly do. It’s so hard to truly come up with something you believe just checks all the boxes while maintaining its uniqueness. Most people even go as far going custom to reach those highs and checked boxes they have for themselves.

I’ve personally go through so many knives it hurt. I’ve gone custom, benchmade, Spyderco, Chris Reeve, Cold Steel, Gerber, CRKT, and many others myself and they all have uniqueness about their approaches. Some approaches seem boring and some seem exciting. Some knives fit my needs, and some don’t. Some companies I can relate to, while others I don’t. Ultimately, it’s subjective, just like music, earphones, colors, and anything else you stand by that is made. But throughout my journey the Spyderco Brand has been the best cutters overall. It’s something about a Spyderco knife when it comes to slicing and cutting. Perhaps it’s their thin design in the blade or even the heat treat. All I know, is that for cutting, they seem to always end on top.

So when I got the Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight, I expected nothing different. And that’s just what I got. Nothing different in cutting. It sliced and cut just like Syderco has always mastered. But with the Sage 5, it had another trick up its sleeve. The Ergonomics of the feel and Detent design. This knife has a unique closer and detent sound that is a mix of Chris Reeve and a soft rubber stopper. It is one of the hardest knives to explain how it feels. And for those like me who have one, we all seem to mention this. No other knife does this feel and sound the way the Sage 5 Lightweight does. It’s a mix of tolerances and weight of the blade that creates this unique feel of deployment and closer. Even the Volcano 2 way lay scales are uniquely done better than any other FRN handle out in the world. And of course having a compression locking system, which is the best in the world, is just a cheery on top of things. The only knife in the world that seems to have a different unique feel of opening and closing is the Benchmade Mini Freek carbon fiber edition.

In fact, the Sage 5 Lightweight and Mini Freek are the only knives that have such a perfect feeling system with it’s axis locks and compression locks systems even within the same brands. A Spyderco Para 3 doesn’t sound like a Sage 5 Lightweight even though it’s the same brand and lock up system. And a Super freak doesn’t sound like the mini Freek even though both are Benchmade and have the same lock ups.

Ultimately, though.. even with those two, the Sage 5 Lightweight still has the better slicing and cutting. And it is better in the hands with more ways to hold it more secure. So this is why in my option, after 4 years of having this Knife, I would have to say its the best EDC in the knife world. Best feel, best fit, best detent sound and feel, best lock up, best grip, and doesn’t cost you more than $150 because Spyderco still tries to stay responsible (hint.. hint Benchmade and Chris Reeve).
