I know that I recently spoke about the Sonys being the best 2026 release of earphones, but then something happened: the MTW 5 were released. These earphones are the latest and greatest in the world of earphones, and everyone is raving about them and enjoying their sound and amazing looks. Just look above at how amazing this color variant is—absolutely gorgeous! They seem to have captured the hearts of a great many people right now, and for good reason. However, does this mean they have done enough to make Sony give back their crown given for 2026?
Well, that’s a difficult thing to say. I would be less than honest if I didn’t consider this on both fronts. I mean, I have the Sonys, which have features, the most ANC, great sound, and thanks to the new tips I added, finally have the fit I wanted. On the opposite side of the table, the Sennheisers came out, and they really put their best self up front and proud. The sound is even better than the Sonys, and while the ANC isn’t the level of the Sonys, there’s very little difference between their levels versus the Sonys. But then they come back with way better Hear-Through, better overall battery life of 40 hours. And of course, the replacement batteries go and add to this. Their phone call quality is nice in regular environments as well.
But above that is the absolutely gorgeous look of this, even its case size and feel. It just feels and looks like everything I would make myself. To be honest, it looks like it’s almost spy-level tech. It just screams sophistication, if I’m being honest. It’s been a while since earphones not named Noble looked this good. They look more expensive than they are, and the fact that they are cheaper than the Sonys also counts a little. And if this all just stopped here, there would be a problem.
But they don’t stop there. The fit is the catalyst. The way these things fit into my ears and lay in my ears is better than any other earphone in the world. It literally feels like the earphones are not present or are just a part of my ears and body. They don’t feel like extensions of something I have put on or in my ears. They literally disappear, making the music feel like it’s living in me and around me naturally. Yes, other earphones fit well, but these move past feeling good to feeling like nothing is there. With other earphones, I could feel them in my ears, even if they were comfortable. These feel like they are organically a part of my ears, almost like I feel my skin blends into the surface of the earphone. So when this happens, the sheer amount of music, details, and submersion surpasses all other earphone sound ability.
My problem is that I promised myself I wouldn’t do this. I wouldn’t bring in another earphone. And every time I break and do it, only good result happen. This trains my mind to believe that it’s a good thing to seek this same thing over and over because every time I think to myself there is nothing more out there and I can quit, the next item comes out and resets the bar. I never walk into it finding that I shouldn’t have purchased it because it didn’t best what I had. They beat what I had over and over again, even when I do the research and find that shouldn’t. When I get them, they always prove that what I did was good because it always better. So when I gave the Sonys their award it was because of the preview thoughts that the Sennheiser’s weren’t going to live up to the Sonys.
And I think if the issues didn’t keep happening, where either Google Voice would stop working randomly all the time or the inability to use voice controls without giving up other features, I don’t think I would have moved on these. And honestly, that’s how this stuff starts all the time. So features stop working or problems happen. That’s when I consider other things. So when I consider today what I have with the Sennheisers in the face of the award of the Sonys, I think I have to first accept that both companies are great for what they accomplished this year and that there are no losers between these two, no matter what I think I can come to a conclusion on.
But I hate to be that guy, but yes, there is a new Champion and King of the wireless world! The Sennheiser MTW 5 has easily become my favorite overall earphone to date. Winning in sound wasn’t something I expected. I was not prepared for how dominant the sound was over the Sonys and how close they came to the Noble Osprey. But the fit this thing has with this new shape they developed really laid waste to the idea that the Sonys would be the winner. But again, I knew that of all the earphones to be released this year, the Sennheisers were going to prove to be the one that might dethrone whoever was left as king at their release. And sure enough, this is exactly what happened. They beat them with sophisticated design looks, sound, fit, and longevity.
