So, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5, also known as “Dark Matter,” are out on shelves. They are the first Bluetooth earphones that allow battery replacement from a company that matters. Yes, there were open-designed earphones that did this too, but I don’t even remember their name. Beyond that, open-design clip earphones are horrible, period. So, back to what is relevant: Sennheiser. Their design and everything that came with this product today is absolutely fantastic. And despite all of this magic and the stars aligning, something tells me that the Sennheisers won’t sell nearly as well as they should, given all the R&D, hard work, and investment into the design. And that’s a shame.

For me, the greatest creation of Bluetooth earphones was just released, as far as I am concerned. I never had earphones create as deep of a sonic world around me like these. The mids are a marvel, the treble details are holographic, and the bass is so powerful and yet perfectly isolated and fast, without mud or overall bloating. When I wear them, things disappear in my mind, and all I exist within is the music. My brain turns off all thoughts as the realism fools my mind into seeking the world created in the music around me and in every direction. And no, I’m not using the Dolby Atmos feature on the earphone. I just used the Sound Customization feature to determine my hearing and preferences. It feels almost like superposition in the series Dark Matter, hence the nickname. When I wear them, reality doesn’t exist until I look at it again. I know people who take pills to blank out the world like this.

And all of this existed before Dolby Atmos, before I bragged on the 40 hours of battery, before I bragged on the looks, the replaceable battery options, and the battery protection modes to make sure your unit lasts for years and years. And yet I get the feeling that others either won’t get the results I am getting or still won’t buy it, thinking it’s just another earphone. The problem is I have no way to recreate what I’m going through for someone else. My personal sound customization most likely won’t work on the ears of others because all of our ears are shaped differently and have different levels of hearing loss. I’m not even sure I could reduplicate this sound if I lost it.

All I know is that it’s the single greatest Bluetooth experience I’ve ever had in sound and fit because the shape of the earphones and how they fit into your ears plays a huge role in the sound, even more so with this unit. It’s a part of the illusion that fools your brain into buying into the holographic imaging.

Since the launch of this product, I just don’t see anywhere near the amount of reviews on YouTube I thought I would. The couple I have seen praise them for sound, but they don’t get into the weeds like I’ve experienced. Or they rank them as though it’s just a regular earphone with only battery replacement options. So either I have a unit that is completely different from theirs, or my Sound Customization unlocked the perfect balance for my ears and frequency response that aligned with my DNA or something :).

But if this continues and it’s an indicator of the sales, this could be the last consumer Sennheiser Bluetooth earphone. Sonova, the owners of the Consumer Division of Sennheiser, doesn’t want the partnership anymore and is looking to sell it off after four years of ownership. So this could explain why this product has everything including the kitchen sink and why they made it for future-proofing. This could be the company giving their best punch before the lights go out for them. If these earphones don’t generate enough sales or if Sonova doesn’t find someone to sell off this division to, this could be the end of consumer Sennheiser Bluetooth earphones and headphones. And if this is the case, it’s a complete shame such a great and respected company is lost. Here’s hoping that all those people who worked so hard on their MTW 5 get the sales and attention they deserve.
