People, candy bar-shaped phones are in danger. This passport design is taking over, and it could not be more obvious. But if you really need proof, look at the sales of the Ultra compared to the Fold 8; the difference is not even close. They are running away with the sales against their supposed superior brother. All the talk about the camera and picture quality, all this talk about not having a telephoto lens, IP rating, blah, blah, blah.
The Fold 8 is destroying the market in sales and has become the hottest Android foldable phone in the world right now. I know I am crazy about it, so much so that I pick it over the iPhone Duo, even though I know the iPhone Duo will outsell it and leave every foldable phone in its dust. For me, it is not about popularity, hype, or anything other than a preferred OS and preferred weight and shape. To the rest of the world, it is about that Apple logo, and I fully understand and do not hate on that. Apple earned that right and respect from its fans, just as Samsung earned the respect of its fans.
But when it comes down to these two variants of the Samsung Fold, for me, it is the passport design easily. The design makes so much difference in the way the phone feels and how I operate it. Simply typing on it is different and perfectly accurate on the Fold 8 for me, but on the Fold 7, it is a horrible experience, and the Fold Ultra is the same shape. Just opening it up is a completely different experience because of the symmetrical shape. One looks like a fold and one looks like a sheet of paper, and for me, I’ll take the sheet of paper. You might be different and that’s fine. I’m not saying the Ultra isn’t a great phone, but I have the Fold 7 and I can never go back to that skinny or tall design ever again.
You just can’t replace this look for me and my life now that I have it. When reading my Bible or ebooks, I can never return to that skinny or tall look and layout. Nor can any oversized box design that isn’t that 4:3 ratio work. But I can’t say why the sales are what they are against the Ultra for everyone else. All I can say is it doesn’t surprise me, and it’s just a sign of more to come for this ratio of foldables. So buckle up, people; the world of foldable smartphones is just catching its stride.
