I can’t tell you how many articles I’ve written about these earphones, but it’s been a lot. These earphones by Sennheiser, the MTW5s, are so amazing. I have $2,000 wired IEMs that I don’t use even one-third of the time I use these. The sheer amount of joy these things help bring into my life of sound is significant. The way they process sound is so different because it is linked directly to the fit and shape of the earphones. They are designed to fit your ears and seal without going so far into your ear canals that you notice they are inside them..

It totally submerges my mind in the spectrum of sound and even beyond at times. Its euphoric tuning, soundstage, and separation make it almost an out-of-body experience. Your brain truly believes you aren’t listening to, but experiencing, the sound. Songs like Floating River (shown above) are just one simple yet profound example of details and timbre unlike any other experience in Bluetooth. Sure, you can find great sound without a masterful fit, or a masterful fit without sound that submerges your spirit, but with the Sennheiser MTW5, you get it all: great battery life, great ANC, and good Hear-Through.

We even have one of the most addictive and useful-sized cases for the earphones. They slide into your pocket perfectly and never get in the way. I love how the hinges feel as I open and close them.

It is such a complete package that even its app is perfectly designed to deliver only the things needed. It has Dolby Atmos features, custom EQ, and button mapping, but it has no gimmicks. For me, this is the only thing missing. I wish it would read my text messages automatically or activate Google Assistant with my voice only, or perhaps give me voice commands without command words, but none of that exists. It is not perfect, but it is still my favorite because of the fit and sound. It also only has decent phone call quality. In fact, the only thing remotely close to a gimmick is the sound zones..

I should use one of them one day, but I haven’t thus far. Other than that, you are stuck with just the basics. But the fact that I can keep these for 10 years because of the replaceable batteries is incredible and special, at least until the end of 2027, when other manufacturers have to do the same thing..

I think this hobby is coming to an end at this point in my life. I am 51 years old, and though I look like I am 39 or 40, my mind is at a point where I feel less excitement or thrilled about things. An excess of things and different versions of things are starting to bother me more than they make me happy. I know I have amazing audio that cannot be beat in my IEMs and portable players, but they are not convenient. They irritate me with their wiring, which never goes away. I am always aware of them because I have to be; otherwise, they fall or pull things to the floor because they are connected by wires or get hung on things. It’s to the point that I’m considering only having these and my desktop headphones by Abysss, and my travel headphones by Sony and then sell the rest.
